Andros Diroll-Black

Artwork by Andros Diroll.

I like to think that art should be an expression of raw creativity. I try to start and finish paintings in one sitting, letting my ideas pour out at once. I think it keeps the works pure, consistent, and free from the doubts that constantly plague me.

My main strength as an artist, I think, is my use of color. I love vivid colors and contrasts, but try to balance the glare with subtle textures and highlights in my work. It’s that odd patch of yellow in a field of red that makes the whole thing stand out….

My inspiration comes from the things around me, my friends, my job, my family, my neighborhood. I have a kind of photographic memory, and certain images will stick in my brain, forming the basis of what will become a work of art. I let the idea stew in my head for days or weeks, until it develops into a theme I want to turn into a painting. When the theme takes on a life of its own, I drop everything and start putting brush to canvas.

I paint primarily with acrylic and brushes, but sometimes use my hands, scrapers, and other instruments. I love to draw and when the mood strikes me, I doodle on everything within reach. I have a background in illustration and graphic design, but have no formal training outside of grade school.
