 Artist Statement:

Art and nature are very closely linked in my eyes. It is thus my goal to express the natural and in doing this, attempt to grow closer to all that is natural. My language of line and naturalistic execution are two unvarying characteristics of my art.  The lines that appear in my work are rarely straight and tend to have an elemental organic quality as they trace random drips of paint, or follow the instinctual motion of my hand as it moves across the canvas.  In the act of artistic creation, I find relationships to automatism.  This connection lies not so much in the sense of extracting the subconscious, but more in extracting the most basic and primordial qualities within me.

Most recently I have been experimenting with the integration of collage in my work.  I have begun by utilizing collage as line work relating to and conversing with the paint and also with using it as the meat of the artwork.  The collage and paint are in constant interplay. The collage may echo or communicate with painted line, become the determinant of line and/or the platform on which the line lays. The paint may, of course, do the same for the collage. In both cases the collage, in combination with the paint, forces the viewer to look more closely and question whether what they are seeing is paint or another additive element.

The collage pieces I choose have personal meaning, but through the process of tearing, or reassembling them, they loose their distinctness and obvious reference points. My paintings come to be vessels similar to myself.  Humans are the most extreme containers of personal meaning, but this meaning gets morphed and sometimes completely lost in translation.  Despite all attempts of closeness, no personal meaning will ever be crystal clear.  The phrase ‘I understand’ becomes virtually meaningless.
